On Wednesday, December 30, 2020, former President John Dramani Mahama told Ghanaians that he “and other people who have expressed reservations with the results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC)” are being impressed upon “to let go in the interest of peace”.
I am glad he stood his ground. I am not anti-peace, but I don’t agree that Mahama should concede merely because (to quote him) “we are being reminded that Ghanaians are a peace-loving people”.
Having said this, however, I don’t think it is true that any Ghanaian has told the former President to let go “in the interest of peace”. What I’ve heard, so far, are pleas to him and the NDC to “go to court” in the interest of peace.
President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has promised to work with the newly-elected Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to advance the peace, progress and prosperity of the Ghanaian people.
In his inaugural address shortly after taking the oath of office for his second term as President on Thursday, 7 December 2020, Nana Akufo-Addo congratulated Mr Bagbin, who had been his colleague lawmaker for years, on his elevation to the position of Speaker.
Nana Akufo-Addo said: “I must, at the outset, express my warm congratulations to my good friend and colleague of many years in this House, the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on his assumption of office as the Speaker of the Eighth Parliament of the 4th Republic”.
Former Minister of Attorney, Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor says the recent Presidential and Parliamentary elections were characterized by strange manipulations never witnessed in the history of Ghana.
According to him, it is a known fact that African elections are manipulated one way or the other but one will expect that in Ghana’s case that would have been done with a bit of sophistication and decency.
Speaking at a programme in Accra to commemorate the 31st December Revolution on Thursday, the former Law Lecturer stated that never has Ghana’s election results been changed several times as has happened under the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission.
