where was hillary clinton on the issue of social security in her last campaign? well as you know, we ll soon be hearing a great deal from hillary clinton on the full range of domestic issues. back when she went toe to toe with then senator barack obama in april 2008, clinton sounded like she favored a bipartisan compromise to fix the entitlement. you ve got to begin to rein in the budget, pay as you go to try to replenish our social security trust fund. and with all due respect, the last time we had a crisis in social security was 1983. president reagan and speaker tip o neal came up with a commission. that was the best and smartest way. because you have to get republicans and democrats together. soun kind of deal which would allow some benefit cuts in an exchange for an increase in taxes. clearly clinton will change some of the approach of her 2008 campaign. we ll see if she has a new vision on this issue. very interesting story. mike emanuel great to see you, thank you.
republicans on the hill saying, we need entitlement reform. why isn t the president doing more on entitlement reform. here are some medicare cuts, and republicans and democratic senators say, no, no, don t do this? you re right, there are hypocrites in both parties. they talk the talk on entitlement reform and they don t deliver, the president could have had permanent entitlement reform proposals, over time, like we did with social security in the 80s, extending the age at which you qualify for medicare from 65 to 67. that would be a permanent fix. the president always avoided those permanent reforms, he s gone for quick fixes, like cutting medicare advantage, which is a program he doesn t like, because it s private sector medicine managing it. help me understand, social security future benefit cuts had been on the table they re not now. they re not going to be in there now. the white house says that s because the president put those painful cuts on the table.
happened in january. you know, why do we wait until the last minute to talk about what is going to happen tomorrow? mark halpern? a big vote coming up to deal with the raising of the debt ceiling which seems to be on the table now and run revision to help the military benefit cuts. where do you stand on that tradeoff o that vote and where do the house republicans stand overall on that? there will be some for it and some against it. we have, what, 232, 233 republicans and probably we have 232, 233 different solutions for the problem. it s the problem that leadership has trying to figure where most of us are and how to get this thing fixed. there is no question that we have already passed a budget that debt is going to go up. we have to face that fact. if we cut all of the discretionary spending that we vote on every year, if we totally eliminated it and grow
