After a pressure-packed year of putting on classical performances in the midst of a pandemic, and facing festering tensions over his treatment of actors and staff, Ethan McSweeny has resigned as artistic director of American Shakespeare Center, the Staunton, Va., company announced Friday.
The 50-year-old McSweeny, an accomplished Shakespearean director who was running a theater on his own for the first time, said he had finalized his departure from ASC this week after 2 1/2 years at the helm.
