London-based energy partner Silke Goldberg appointed global leader of ESG practice
Silke Goldberg Herbert Smith Freehills is launching a dedicated environmental, social and governance (ESG) practice as demand for sustainability and climate-related advice continues to grow. The new practice area will build on more than three decades of experience advising clients on ESG-related issues across the firm’s existing practice groups. The firm’s global ESG leadership team is being led by London-based energy partner Silke Goldberg, while responsible investment specialist Rebecca Perlman will oversee the UK, the US and EMEA, corporate governance expert Timothy Stutt will head up Australia and business and human rights specialist Antony Crockett will cover Asia.
Ben McQuhae, a former partner at Jones Day, has set up a boutique firm called Ben McQuhae & Co in Hong Kong that focuses on ESG and technology.
McQuhae was most recently a partner at GPS McQuhae, a firm he co-founded in 2018 after leaving Jones Day. Following his departure, GPS McQuhae will be known as Georgiou Payne Stewien.
McQuhae’s new firm will provide legal advice to multinational companies, small and medium enterprises, investors, entrepreneurs and startups on transactions and initiatives in climate, biodiversity, and innovation. Apart from McQuhae himself, the firm has two associates - Sean Soo and Jessica Ha.

Ben McQuhae Former Jones Day partner Ben McQuhae has launched a boutique law firm in Hong Kong that will be focused entirely on sustainability and innovation. The eponymously named Ben McQuhae & Co says it aims to operate at the intersection of law, ESG and technology, providing advisory services to multinationals, small and medium-sized companies, investors, startups and entrepreneurs. The focus will be on transactions and other initiatives related to climate, biodiversity and innovation. In a statement, the firm said: “We will choose the work we do, and do not do, by reference to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). We will assess our mandates and measure our impact against the SDGs.”
