The Arbroath Independent has turned on critics in the latest salvo of a bitter dispute over a shamed councillor’s return to the ruling group. The storm was originally sparked by the departure of Arbroath councillor Lois Speed from the Conservative/Independent coalition. She was followed by Monifeith and Sidlaws Liberal Democrat Ben Lawrie. Councillor Lois Speed The council leader offered to stand down, but that was rejected by coalition colleagues.

Arbroath West and Letham member Richard Moore is back in a ruling group which recently lost two councillors amidst claims of an “unhealthy culture” at the top of the authority. Mr Moore was banned from council meetings for three months in 2018 after an ethical standards hearing.

Arbroath Independent Lois Speed stepped down in March, to be followed by Monifieth Liberal Democrat Ben Lawrie after he also cited problems in the top team’s behaviour at the authority’s helm. The resignations prompted council leader David Fairweather to offer his resignation, but alliance colleagues unanimously backed the under-pressure Arbroath Independent. Lois Speed left the Angus administration in March. At a full council meeting on Thursday, Mr Fairweather led moves to have the two councillors replaced in roles they previously held in their administration status.
