and jerk the vice president has done that before in our country, but that person has never been a woman. that was a missed opportunity. yes, i saw some coverage but you didn t see that happening being discussed or the history and importance of that being discussed in the cable news cycle yesterday. vice president harris is a first and she has a responsibility to really normalize her leadership for the press and for the country. that s not something that is going to happen in the pages of investigation and twitter. her public schedule goes out every day and i see that she s doing plenty. but how is she communicaing how she is governing? messaing matters,. we know that she has this portfolio, and as vice president, she s been focused on many of the things that come with the job, like proving that she can be this trusted partner, that joe biden promised that she would be when he picked her, but this job, particularly for her, is also about saleswomanship and this was a challenge for her f
introducing herself to the press and to voters. that s not something she s necessaily comfortable with, and coming from california, maybe she was more used to campaigning on television than the kind of hands-on approach that s required at this level. but like joe biden was a master, is a master of retail politics, and that s something that vice president harris is going to get better. so i take your point on some of that. i think this is a combination of a few things because the belt way press is not as diverse as it could or should be, and the beltway press frequently talks to each other about each other and for each other. rarely are they talking to people outside the beltway and then there is the issue of her staff because vice-president kamala harris is dealing with all these issues. should she be the sole person putting together her operation? our friend just departed the white house. she was going to leave after a year so this isn t necessaily connected to everything else
he has shown thus far in these first months of his presidency that he likes to go to places that are right in the middle or even places that voted for trump. he was in lauren underwood s district today, gave her a major shoutout for her effectiveness as a young congresswoman. we ll talk to her in a moment about having the president come to her patch today and what it s like to be serving in a swing district in this congress with president biden versus her first term during the trump administration. like i said, there s a lot interesting going on in the news stay. it s a really substantive day in the news. but it s one of those days in the news where there isn t that split screen quality that i think the belt way press looks for every day, that split screen quality between what s happening on one side of politics and the supposed mirror image of how the other side of politics is approaching the same set of problems. on the democratic side, there is all that stuff i just described
sanders had 5,000 cheering liberals in louisiana last night. that s the same place where bobby jindal, governor of louisiana held his presidential announcement a few weeks ago. but when bobby jindal was there he only turned out 1,000 people. bernie sanders turned out a crowd between four and five times that size. did i mention he s from vermont? the bernie sanders phenomenon is befuddling. totally befuddling for the belt way press. i believe that anything that spoils the common wisdom that spectacularly has to be good for us as a country. shakes i up a little bit. whatever caused the common whiz tom needs to be changed because the common wisdom is wrong and
state politician associate with the that behavior, right? but in texas, the republican calculation is that it is more important to be really anti-gay than to support the troops. contrary to beltway wisdom right now, on the right, radically anti-gay politics are they have got a bunch of victories lately, they have got the republican party wrapped afternoon their fijer to where people are choosing their anti-gay politics over their support for the military. right now as the republican speaker of the house is booking meeting rooms so anti-gay groups can meet in the basement of the u.s. capitol and is refusing even allowing an anti-gay discrimination bill to be aggressively anti-gay stance than they are in a really, really long time. it s weird and you would never know it from reading the belt
