In recent years, first it was the Covid-19 that was dubbed a pandemic, followed by the high figures of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) which President Cyril Ramaphosa described as the country’s second pandemic.
SA is heralded as a liberal country that is accepting of gender and sexual diversity, yet queer students in teaching and learning spaces experience victimisation and bullying because of their identity. Without doubt, in every teaching and learning environment, there will be students who are (or may be) queer, or know people who identify themselves as such.
