ITHACA, NY For 12 years Christa Núñez, originally from Michigan, and her husband, Pete, originally from the Dominican Republic via NYC, lived in Northern California.Â
âWe lived in a community amongst the Redwoods, only 20 miles from the ocean and three hours from San Francisco.âÂ
But as their children grew up and California was beset by droughts and wildfires, the Núñez family was ready to pull up stakes and find a community in which their dream would flourish.
âWe want all children to have access to nature for free play in beautiful green spaces. During our years in California, we learned and talked and tried out our ideas, but we needed to find the right community. By the time we found Ithaca, we were ready to get started and break ground.â
Dorothy âDGâ Gifford Bancroft was a tenth generation Manhattanite, born to a surgeon and the managing RN of Columbia Presbyterian ER. DG headed to Stanford, her fatherâs alma mater, for college. There, she met, fell in love, and married Dixie Bob âD. BobâGowin, who was raised on a pony farm in Ft. Worth, Texas.
After Stanford, the attractive young couple soon had two young children as their professional lives brought them to Ithaca. Sarah was four years old when she arrived at their home on Dryden Road with her parents and her brother Robin. DG wanted to live near a bus line, and Bob could walk to the Education Department at Cornell.
