SPONSORED Ciaran MacDonald operates a 350-cow dairy herd on Bellair Estate, Ballycumber, Co Offaly. “We are a spring-calving system, using high-EBI Friesian bulls across the herd. We start calving on 1 February and aim to be finished by the end of April. We keep around 100 heifer calves each year, selling all the bull calves after three to four weeks. There are two full-time employees with me on the farm and we also hire in additional part-time labour at calving time.”
