Egypt and Walls of Jericho in Thornton featured in study | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

Just one mile away from the town of Thornton, Bradford, is England s very own Egypt. The town is surrounded by high walls, nicknamed ‘The Walls of Jericho’, possibly in relation to Napoleon s invasion of Egypt. There’s a widespread fascination in Bradford with the Walls of Jericho which until 1986 were a unique Thornton landmark. Constructed between 1847 and 1891 to retain spoil from the quarries at Egypt and Bell Dean, they were used in the early 1980s on posters to promote tourism in Bradford. Then problems began. The weight of material packed behind them was rendering them unsafe. It was eventually decided that most of the walls must come down and a new bypass road be built. The work was done in 1985 and completed by mid-January 1986, when Egypt Road reopened to road traffic.

Bus routes cut, sledging and snowmen as snow causes disruption | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

SNOW brought disruption to the Bradford district today but the wintry weather is not set to last this weekend. Bus routes were changed and residents built snowmen and took to their sledges as the cold snap continued to bite today. The snow fell steadily across Bradford all day to end the first week of lockdown, as temperatures struggled to reach just above freezing. This weather also led to three schools making the decision to close to all pupils, including key worker and vulnerable children. Queensbury St John and Evangelist Catholic Primary School, in Beacon Road, and St Winefride s Catholic Primary Academy, in St Paul s Avenue, were both closed all day due to heavy snowfall.
