“Looking at the conclusions of our study, we can highlight the importance of good oral health in the prevention and management of COVID-19 complications,” Professor Belinda Nicolau, of McGill’s Faculty of Dentistry, told
McGill Newsroom. “There is a very strong correlation between periodontitis and disease outcome.”
Also, people with periodontitis are 3.5 times more likely to require hospitalization for COVID-19 and 4.5 times more likely to require a ventilator than those without gum disease.
“One of the more perplexing things about COVID-19 is its wide range of outcomes in people who get the disease,” the research said.
