Tyler East shot, killed; girlfriend in hospital

Tyler East  Former MMA fighter Tyler East, 30, was shot and killed by an unknown man after East shot his own girlfriend, according to a press release issued by the New Mexico State Police Tuesday afternoon. Valencia County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a domestic violence call at about 5 p.m., Monday, April 5, to a home in the 4200 block of N.M. 314. When deputies arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound and East dead on the property. New Mexico State Police were called in by the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the homicide. State police agents learned East and his girlfriend were fighting, and during the dispute, East brandished a gun, shot his girlfriend, then drug her out of the mobile home.

New PED ruling could hasten prep season

The state’s Public Education Department on Monday put its foot on the proverbial gas pedal. PED Secretary Ryan Stewart said no longer will high school sports teams across the state need to endure the 14-day waiting period to clear COVID-19 protocols before they begin full practices. This development could and perhaps will allow districts like Albuquerque Public Schools to enter their fall varsity sports schedules at least a week earlier than previously planned. “Regardless of (their) re-entry designation, we are now moving into eligibility for (New Mexico Activities Association) participation without the previous two-week waiting period,” Stewart said Monday afternoon.

Student-athletes protest in Belen

The delayed re-entry plan wipes out the fall sports season for student-athletes at Belen High School. The rally was organized by James Lucero, the parent of football player Christopher Lucero and a member of the football booster club, through a Facebook post he made the previous Monday. The group brought signs and stood on the sidewalk outside the building on Main Street as passing cars slowed to read them, with some honking in support. In addition to organizing the rally, Lucero also spoke during the open forum portion of the Belen Board of Education’s meeting, which coincided with the rally.
