Israeli President Reuven Rivlin met with Jewish American leaders in New York on Sunday with a message of unity as he embarked on a farewell tour before he leaves office on July 7. “Even if we live many miles apart, across nations and across parties and ideologies, we are family,” Rivlin told some 50 leaders representing a diverse range of Jewish communities at the Moshe Safra Center on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. “We are simply mishpucha,” he added, using the Yiddish term for family. He said he had wanted to meet with American Jewish leaders because he feels he has represented not just Israeli Jews, but Jewish people worldwide. “The long-lasting support of the Jewish world and especially the American Jewish communities for Israel make you an inherent part of the Israeli society,” he said, repeatedly referring to the crowd as his “brothers and sisters.”
