Behrend tutoring method being tested at three other universities

Image: Penn State Behrend NSF grant expands project, which began in 2011 April 27, 2021 A tutoring method developed at Penn State Behrend is now being tested at three other universities, where STEM instructors and campus writing centers are collaborating to help students write better technical reports. The National Science Foundation is supporting the project with a $588,000 grant. The three-year study expands the WATTS tutoring method, which stands for “Writing Assignment Tutor Training in STEM.” The approach, which provides tutors with course-specific glossaries and guidance from faculty members, was first implemented at Penn State Behrend in 2011. It is now being tested at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, Indiana University-Purdue University at Columbus and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Penn State Behrend launches new major in polymer engineering and science

Image: Canstock Photo December 16, 2020 ERIE, Pa. Polymers are among the most important materials that make up our world from everyday items like clothing, electronics, and building materials to complex, life-saving medical devices. Students in Penn State Behrend’s new Polymer Engineering and Science program will learn to analyze these diverse materials and evaluate their applications in a variety of industries, including health care, aerospace and automotive manufacturing. Through the new degree offering, they will understand why polymers behave the way they do, and then use that knowledge to design new, specialized and more environmentally sustainable materials. “Because of their deep understanding of the relationships between structure, processing and properties, polymer scientists and engineers are in demand in every industry that uses polymers and that’s almost every imaginable industry,” said Greg Dillon, professor of polymer engineering and scienc
