After canceling last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the University of Arkansas System Criminal Justice Institute hosted its 16th annual Arkansas Safe Schools Conference last week at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.
Co-sponsored this year by Gov. Asa Hutchinson, the Arkansas Safe Schools Association, the state Department of Education, and state Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, the two-day conference drew more than 200 school resource officers, law enforcement officials, commissioned school security officers, educators, and counselors from around the state including officials from the White Hall

The University of West Florida announces Dr. Mary Anderson as its new dean of students, effective July 6. In this position, Anderson will oversee the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities; Case Management Services; Argo Food Pantry; Housing and Residence Life; Student Government Association advising and operations; and University Commons and Event Services.
“Mary’s commitment to students and her understanding of what it takes to contribute to their overall success makes her a welcome addition to our team,” said Dr. Kim LeDuff, vice president for the Division of Academic Engagement and Student Affairs. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our campus community and we look forward to the impact she will make.”

Steve Lewis:Previously on Inside the FBI, we looked back at the investigation that led to the arrest of Ted Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber one of the nation’s most notorious domestic terrorists.
When the FBI closed the UNABOM case in 1996, it didn’t tuck it away in a closet.
The investigation taught us lessons that are still evident in today’s FBI. The UNABOM task force brought together personnel from counterintelligence and criminal investigations, a successful combination that helped inform the makeup of the FBI’s dedicated counterterrorism unit when it was created in 2000.
The Unabomber also helped the FBI better understand the lone offender a threat that has continued to grow in the decades since his arrest.
