and you go through it here. so some of the other races we re watching in florida are down here and you come down to southern florida. we talked about these earlier before we had any results. the republican incumbent, carlos curbelo, has been sharply critical of the president in recent days, saying your immigration message is over the top. the caravan are not invaders or bad people. you shouldn t take away birthrig birthright citizenship. watch this one. then you come next door to this district here, republican incumbent retires, shalala ahead here. that s a decent vote count. former television personality running in the district. republicans found a good candidate. this is a seat the democrats really think they do need to pick up so that s 27 there. i want to pull it out to take a look again. if you look at it this way here, the goal is for democrats let s tap this out. come out here. come back out. there we go. if you re the democrats, you need a net goal of 23. you re leading right
what does it say about potential other pickups? it shows that donald trump, as we have been saying for a long time, and republicans and paul ryan have been warning about for some time, is toxic in a lot of the suburbs and specifically, and we ll get down to the breakdown in the exit polls about this, specifically with a lot of republican and white college-educated women. and he s toxic with them because of the way he talks, because of the way he doesn t convey empathy. at times when there is a national tragedy. and that was a motivating factor. this is also, of course, we should point out, largely a democratic district, but it is one that a republican had control over for several years. you and i know this district very well because it s suburbs of washington, d.c. we re closing in on one of the most critical hours of this election night with the biggest round of poll closings coming up at 8:00 p.m. eastern. all voting ends in alabama, kentucky, delaware, the district of columbia
tampa suburbs have grown, tallahassee is vital for the democrats. if you re the republicans, you don t like being behind but you re looking at the map and you re thinking, okay, the middle part of the state, it s a lot of republican votes we haven t seen yet. we ve been through this dance before, the most critical part of the state for democrats as long as they do their business up here is turning it out in the popular series. that s about a third of the population of florida in those three counties alone. right down there. so the old joke, the further south you go, the further north you get. these are voters. this is the south. trump voters, tea party voters up here. down here, a lot of transplants from new york and new england. this is much more democratic area here. no votes yet. these three counties at the bottom tend to come in later. especially the final 10 or 15% of the vote. when those counties start coming in, it will be good news for the democrats. the key test for th
comprehensive immigration reform. if he were to cross his party on issues like taxes, abortion, or guns, it would be quite another story. but in the meantime, begging republicans to ditch mr. trump is a waste of time. susan, your take? well, i think it s you re right. this was written before these numbers come out. but there s numbers that came out last week, i believe, from and it showed the right direction/wrong direction of this country. and only 30% said it s in the right direction. and that s where the rubber meets the road, if you will, because republicans, the base yes, they re there, but there are a lot of moderates. we saw it even in the florida primary. even though it was a blowout, 30% of republicans in florida basically said no to donald trump. so that s where i think the movement is. and you know, in the midterm elections, i think you probably see those republicans stay home, which is going to be very
but, now it s getting a little, um, it s getting a little nerve-racking, watching what s happening. it s disturbing, i think, to some. and you wonder how much that is pervading the base. yeah, and i m going to put on my msnbc political analyst hat here and say, these numbers are not good for donald trump. and i think that we re going to see a few things here. first of all, we are just nine weeks away from the midterms. these numbers are very, very worrisome for republicans, who know they have such an uphill climb ahead of them, to try to hold on to the house, even if they are able to hold on to the senate. it s going to embolden democrats, i think, the talk of impeachment, the talk of investigations that i think we discussed earlier. we ll see more and more of that, seeing a president who we think is weakened and vulnerable. but i think we ll see the exact opposite from president trump. we know that when he s backed into a corner, which i m sure he will feel he is, after seeing these
