hearings, televised hearings that we have that has been reported would be in primetime. yeah, you know, jonathan, my hope and, again, i trust my colleagues on the committee and the leadership of the committee in particular, and their judgment, my hope would be that the american people have an opportunity to hear directly from some of the cooperating witnesses who were involved in the events that led up to january 6th, so that they can be fully apprised as to the threats that existed that day and the threat that still exists today. my fear, jonathan, is that folks assume wrongfully that the threats that existed on january 6th don t exist anymore. and that s simply not the case. what happened on january 6th could very well happen again if we don t put in place the necessary safeguards and if we aren t vigilant as a public to ensuring that democratic norms that have covered our country for the better part of the last 234 years remain. and that includes, of course,
we have the information we need to present this picture and accounting of january 6th, to the public, we will finalize the schedule for the hearings. i anticipate them in the spring. congresswoman elaine luria of virginia, member of the january 6th select committee, thank you very much for coming to the sunday show. thank you. joining me now is former house impeachment manager congressman joe neguse. welcome back to the sunday show. good morning, jonathan. good to be with you. so how much of the information we re learning today was already known to you a year ago today when trump was acquitted by the senate? well, certainly some of the information was aware, we were aware of and that information was shared on the floor of the united states senate during the course of the impeachment trial, almost a year ago today. but, i think the select committee has also learned a great deal of new information that i suspect it will be sharing with the american people as you heard my
luria articulate. i think in particular the reality is that the financing of january 6th, the events that led up to that tragic day, the fact you have a number of witnesses who are participating with the committee by all accounts and i suspect will be testifying in person during the course of those hearings, all of that is information we did not have at our disposal during the accelerated timeline in terms of the impeachment trial that commenced five weeks after january 6th. how important is it for the january 6th committee to hold public televised hearings? i think it is critical, jonathan. first, let me say, i think chairman thompson has done an incredible job leading the select committee. and, of course, many of my colleagues are friends who serve on that committee, articulate, eloquent members of congress who i think will equip themselves well during the public hearings as they have done during this
axios is reporting that new york times reporter maggie haberman writes in a forth coming book that the white house staff periodically discovered wads of printed paper clogging a toilet. and believed trump was to blame. while nbc news hasn t independently verified this, it sure seems to shed some light on moments like these. i won t use the example of toilets because it is sort of gross, right? but let s use it anyway. so no water comes out. so people are flushing it seven, eight, ten, 12 times. the end result is it is no good. ten times. not me, of course. not me. people are flushing toilets ten times, 15 times as opposed to once. they end up using more water. it is like the man was telling on himself. and that s just the beginning of trump s record keeping problems. white house records obtained by the january 6th select committee do not include any phone calls during the hours long period
people. so there s a lot that we are doing and we re going to make a contrast between the party working on behalf of the american people and a party that is working for itself. chairman harrison, one thing that democrats who are in control of the house and the senate haven t been able to get dutch is build back better. went down in a ball of flames at the end of last year when senator manchin said, i can t get with it. now there s talk about we re going to try it again. in a meeting with democrats, former president obama, i believe it was on thursday, said, he implored democrats, quote, take the wins you can get. it doesn t help to whine about the stuff you can t change. of course, that s hank greenbergening back to his own experience trying to get the affordable care act over the finish line.
