The New Bedford Art Museum keeps the arts rolling Standard-Times The New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! (NBAM) will be traveling across New Bedford in the iconic purple artMOBILE as it transforms into a “cARTer” MOBILE, beginning on May 7. This outreach program will continue to be a free and accessible creative source where youth can engage in artistic and inventive instruction with quality art supplies. The “cARTer” MOBILE will be incorporating mediums and materials that highlight the Art Museum’s exhibition featuring Ruth E. Carter. An Academy Award-winning costume designer, Carter’s known for her work on Black Panther, Malcolm X, Amistad, Do the Right Thing, and other outstanding motion pictures. The exhibition will follow Carter’s creative process and include sketches, mood boards, iconic costumes, and other ephemera from her Los Angeles studio. This show will open at NBAM on May 1 and run through Nov. 14.

“It feels full circle,” said Ruth E. Carter. “It feels like hometown girl done good.” Born and raised in Springfield, Carter’s solo exhibit, “Uncommon Threads: The Works of Ruth E. Carter,” features her costume designs from “Malcom X,” “Do The Right Thing,” “Selma,” to “Dolemite Is My Name.” She is best known for her Academy Award-winning designs for “Black Panther.” “I feel that Massachusetts was a big part of my beginning,” Carter said. “My foundation came from Springfield and in theater. “There are some wonderful outlets in Massachusetts where you could flourish, you could learn and you could grow,” she said.

Academy Award winning costume designer Ruth E Carter exhibit slated

The Herald News NEW BEDFORD New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! (NBAM) will present Uncommon Threads: The Works of Ruth E. Carter, a solo exhibition celebrating Massachusetts-born Ruth E. Carter’s 30-year career as an Academy Award-winning (Black Panther, 2018) costume designer. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the New Bedford Historical Society, New Bedford Free Public Library, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, and the College of Visual & Performing Arts at UMass Dartmouth (CVPA). The exhibition will feature costumes from Dolemite Is My Name (2019), Roots (2016), Selma (2014), Do The Right Thing (1989), and Malcolm X (1992), accompanied by sketches and mood boards from many of her other films, including Black Panther (2018) and ephemera from her Los Angeles studio.
