JUSTIN TOMLINSON: GWH expansion, disability-friendly parks, litter bugs and AstraZenica vaccine

MP Justin Tomlinson I WAS delighted to learn this week that the expansion of the Great Western Hospital is moving on to the next stage, with the GWH Foundation Trust purchasing five-and-a-half hectares of land next to the hospital. This has been made possible thanks to £30 million of Government funding to expand current services and meet rising demand. Both myself and fellow Swindon MP Robert Buckland pushed to deliver this funding, directly lobbying ministers – including the Health Secretary Matt Hancock. The Government has rightly seen how this will transform both emergency care and transitional care in Swindon, and it is fantastic to see work progressing.

Mum calls for more disability-friendly parks

NEW accessible play equipment at a busy Swindon park has been welcomed – but one mum says more should be done to help disabled children. The King George V play area in Haydon Wick has been resurfaced and now has bongo drums, a rain wheel, sensory panel, a basket swing and new footpaths thanks to the parish council and Benjamin s Smile campaign. The latter was launched by Becky Maddern, who struggles to take six-year-old son Benjamin to the parks along with his brothers Zachary and Jowan. Benjamin, who is blind, was born at 32 weeks and has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Becky has been advocating for play parks to be made disability-friendly when they are due for an upgrade or new ones are installed.
