TECUMSEH, MI – A Tecumseh Police Department sergeant died in a tree-cutting accident Monday.
Sgt. Darrin Briggs was using a chainsaw to cut a tree into pieces around 6:50 p.m., Dec. 14, in the 7000 block of Sterling Road in Hillsdale County, when part of the trunk fell on him, Michigan State Police said previously.
An investigation shows the tree likely had blown over before the man started cutting it and part of the trunk rotated backward and fell on him, police said.
Briggs, 45, of Jerome, started working at the Tecumseh Police Department in July 1997, Tecumseh police said. He graduated from Reading High School in 1993, then attended Lake Superior State University, his obituary reads.
