New Greensburg Salem athletic director Frank Sundry
Frank Sundry had not walked the hallways at Greensburg Salem for more than 16 years when he returned to take over as the school’s athletic director in October.
The environment still felt familiar, the sites had not changed much and there was a sense of comfort returning to his alma mater.
“The transition has been a nice homecoming,” Sundry said. “At first, it was strange … but knowing the facilities and a lot of the people has allowed me to avoid typical barriers that someone faces when beginning a new job.”
Obviously, there have been better years to be an athletic director, especially one starting a new position in near crisis mode. The covid-19 pandemic has garbled schedules, shuffled seasons and changed the way athletic departments operate.

Just before the PIAA soccer finals, Gov. Tom Wolf and Pa. Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine announced ramped-up guidelines that would make sports teams wear face coverings during competition.
The rules later were loosened, and athletes did not have to wear masks during play, only on the sidelines, if their district officials ruled that way.

Norwin’s Alex Gabauer jumps over Penn-Trafford’s Bobby Lane during a rundown in 2019.
No high school baseball season last spring only served to motivate players like Alex Gabauer, a slick-fielding, power-hitting shortstop at Norwin.
The senior has committed to play at Penn, so his college future is secure as secure as it can be during the covid-19 pandemic.
But baseball can lead prospects down meandering paths and take them to places they’ve only dreamed about.
College usually is the sure thing. But there is always that flickering hope to play at the next level. The Bigs. The Show. The Majors.
