The 10 Most Affordable Cities for an Early Retirement
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many Americans into an early retirement: In fact, the majority of the seven-percentage-point drop in the labor participation this past spring can be attributed to unemployed people who have prematurely decided to exit the workforce for good, according to a paper from the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago.
And though less than 1% of workers in the U.S. ordinarily retire before 50, according to data from the LIMRA Secure Retirement Institute, the rise of the “Financial Independence Retire Early” (FIRE) movement has Americans searching for ways to leave the labor force in advance of what may be the typical age range.
Study suggests the U.S. may undervalue timesaving transportation infrastructure
How much money is time worth? It’s an age-old question, but University of Chicago economists and their collaborators think they have found the answer $19.38 per hour. It’s a finding with policy implications, according to the economists, because it suggests the U.S. government may currently be underestimating the value of travel time.
To quantify the value of time, the economists created a field experiment involving 3.7 million users of the Lyft app in 13 cities. By manipulating the price quotes and wait times displayed on the app, the researchers were able to study how much customers were willing to pay for a faster rideshare pickup.

Some Americans have a new outlook on remote working: They prefer it.
In June and July, a group of 1,388 people working from home were asked for their impressions of the experience by workplace consulting firm Global Workplace Analytics and video technology company Owl Labs.
The new arrangement, it turns out, suited many of them.
While roughly 27% said they would have considered such a setup to be ideal before the coronavirus pandemic started, 80% said they would like to continue working remotely for three days of the week or more once the pandemic is over. Many of these people said they would prefer remote work all five days of the workweek.

“To be happy at home is the ultimate result of all ambition, the end to which every enterprise and labour tends.” – Samuel Johnson, 1750
St. Louis, Mo. Hour by hour over the years, we have abandoned our homes. We sent our children away, so often at a very early age, for common schooling often run by the State. Sometimes, they hop on a bus before the sun rises and return toward dinnertime. We left home ourselves to become wage-slaves in occupations that in so many ways separate our minds and our hearts from our families. Our mark of success is not a passionate and seemingly interminable game of Monopoly around a well-worn dinner table but commanding a meeting in a conference room where screens filled with PowerPoints replace the homely hearth.
