Russia sanctions Germany over Alexei Navalny case Moscow has barred some German and EU officials from entering Russia as part of its response to EU sanctions, following the poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Navalny has been recovering in Germany after an attempt on his life Russia imposed unjustified sanctions on representatives of the German government over European Union penalties related to  the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, a German Foreign Ministry official said on Tuesday. Beate Grzeski, the charge d affaires of the German Embassy in Moscow, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry and informed that countermeasures in the form of travel bans against German state institutions have been ordered,  a German Foreign Ministry source told French news agency AFP.

Moscow has expanded the list of European officials barred from entering Russia in response to the European Union’s sanctions over the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The move comes a day after Mr Navalny, a long-time opponent to President Vladimir Putin, released a recording of a phone call he said he made to an alleged state security operative, who was identified by media as a member of a team that has reportedly trailed the politician for years. In the recording, the man indicated his involvement in covering up the supposed poisoning and revealed details of the alleged operation.
