Playoff time is upon us and the first round of games today, surprisingly, led to no
real surprises. The games that you would have expected to be tight ones, were tight, and the games that you would expect to be out of reach were as well. So far, the selection committee seems to have been pretty spot on with where they’ve placed everyone.
But if I had to guess, the lack of “upsets” will not last… as I’m sure that there will be at least one or two games that we all won’t expect the results of.

Loyola vs. Hofstra
Loyola (11-2) punched its ticket to the NCAAs by winning its fifth Patriot League championship in seven years last weekend. The Greyhounds have won at least one NCAA Tournament game in seven of its eight appearances under head coach Jen Adams and last made the quarterfinals in 2015. Hofstra (6-6), which earned an at-large bid, is making its first appearance in the tournament since 2007.
Livy Rosenzweig paces the Greyhounds in goals (32), assists (42), points (74) and draws (73). Jillian Wilson (23 G, 16 A, 61 DC, 17 CT) also knows how to stuff a stat sheet. Loyola ranks fourth nationally in scoring defense (7.69) and is anchored by goalie Kaitlyn Larsson (7.84 GAA, .519 save percentage). Larsson’s GAA is fourth in Div. I.

No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Northwestern have played a cut above the rest of the field this year. The rest of Division I lacrosse is up for grabs, with multiple teams in the sport’s traditional powerhouse conferences, the ACC and Big Ten, jockeying for positioning in the standings.
Last week, Boston College topped a Notre Dame team that took UNC to the brink. The Eagles will close the season at Syracuse in what could be the matchup of the weekend. In the Big Ten, Rutgers upset Maryland, and Johns Hopkins topped Penn State.
