Kootenay Columbia MP Rob Morrison said the project would be a welcomed step forward for Kootenay-Columbians as we work together in the effort to reach a net-zero future.
The idea, that was originally spearheaded by the Castlegar & District Economic Development to move people through the region using the Kootenay Valley Railway tracks, was updated in a report in 2020.
Now, Kootenay Columbia MP Rob Morrison is eager to use his lobbying skills to assist in doing what he can to power the proposed “local inter-town rail travel” a little farther down the track.
“The proposed passenger rail service is a unique opportunity to introduce electric-powered passenger rail travel to our area,” Morrison told

To date, $321,343 has been secured to fund the construction of the trail and $1.419 million has been collected for the construction of the bridge. Alongside the province, the project’s contributors include the federal government, the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, and Innergex Renewable Energy. “The goal has always been to bring this project to fruition without local taxation… There’s quite a bit of funds involved, so it took years to do it and the fact that there’s… so much support for it; it’s wonderful,” said Pemberton Mayor Mike Richman. The project is a great example of teamwork in the region, SLRD Area C director Russell Mack said. “Everybody’s working together, so it’s going to be really good when it’s finished,” he said.
