Hudson Reporter Bayonne to rename street after Edith Ferrell She served the community in myriad ways and was a champion for veterans × Edith Ferrell and Mayor James Davis The Bayonne City Council has moved to rename West 19th Street for the late Edith Ferrell at its council caucus meeting on Feb. 10. The council will likely vote to adopt the resolution at its Feb. 17 meeting. The resolution will rename the portion of the street between Broadway and Avenue C as Edith Ferrell Way. The Flournoy Gethers VFW Post #7470 is on that part of the street, where Ferrell was Auxiliary President. Her contributions to the city are being honored.

BHD talks COVID-19, variants, and vaccines

× Suzanne Cavanaugh gave the weekly COVID-19 update on Jan. 28. According to federal, state, and local health agencies, as of Jan. 29, Hudson County was at an extremely high risk level for COVID-19. Before this dire warning, Hudson County Registered Nurse at the Bayonne Health Department (BHD) Suzanne Cavanaugh gave the weekly COVID-19 video update. COVID-19 in Bayonne Cavanaugh said that for almost a year, the BHD, led by Michelle O’ Reilly, has been working nonstop to educate, monitor, trace, and vaccinate the community. Over the last few months, active cases of COVID-19 have been on the rise, she said. As of Jan 28, there were under 500 active cases, according to Office of Emergency Management. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 98 residents have died, and 4,086 have recovered as of Jan. 21.

Seniors begin receiving the COVID-19 vaccine

× A local senior receives the first dose of the Moderna vaccine on Jan. 21 at Bayonne Medical Center. On Jan. 21,  individuals at high risk began receiving the vaccine in Bayonne as part of Phase 1B. That includes seniors over the age of 65 and anyone between 16 and 64 with serious medical conditions. As Phase 1B continues, those in Phase 1A can still be vaccinated. According to the state, Phase 1A includes healthcare personnel and long-term care facility workers and residents. Phase 1B includes first responders and individuals at high risk. Additional essential workers and other individuals at high risk may be vaccinated later in Phase 1B and or in Phase 1C. The general public will receive the vaccine in Phase 2.
