Baylor track and field is gearing up to host the Michael Johnson Invitational this weekend. With 22 schools in the home meet, the Bears are using it as an opportunity to prepare for championship season, according to head coach Michael Ford.
Baylor will retire the jersey of former star Brittney Griner on Feb. 18 when the Bears host Texas Tech. Griner helped Baylor go 40-0 her junior year en route to a national championship and finished her college career with 3,283 points and 1,305 rebounds. “I’m honored to return home to Baylor and celebrate where so much of my journey started,” Griner said.
Baylor coach Nicki Collen felt the emotions with the sixth-ranked Bears making their debut in a new home arena. “I huddled them right before they went out there, I said, I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve dreamed of moments like this,” said Collen, the third-year Baylor coach. Bella Fontleroy scored 16 of her 21 points in a big second-half comeback as the Bears, after trailing at halftime for the first time this season, won 71-50 over No. 23 TCU in a matchup of undefeated Big 12 teams Wednesday night.
