House passes tax relief bill for COVID medical frontliners

February 1, 2021 | 7:38 pm Font Size PHILSTAR THE House of Representatives approved on final reading a bill proposing to give medical frontliners a 25% tax discount for their tax due in 2020. On Monday, lawmakers voted 235-0 on House Bill No. 8259 which provides tax relief to healthcare workers who helped contain the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The bill, which if signed will be known as the “Handog sa mga Bayaning Lumaban Kontra COVID-19 Act,” will grant healthcare frontliners working in institutions treating COVID-19 patients 25% off on their tax bill on salary and related compensation. Tax relief does not cover businesses, investments, and other income not related to their health services.

To be known as the “Handog sa mga Bayaning Lumaban Kontra COVID-190 Act” (Gift to Heroes who Fought Against COVID-19 Act) , HB 8259 consolidated six legislative measures proposing to extend to doctors, nurses and others working in allied medical fields tax  incentives for their efforts in protecting their countrymen  against the COVID 19 pandemic. Deputy Speaker and 1PACMAN Partylist Rep. Michael Romero noted that he filed his bill several months before COVID-19 wrought havoc to public health. His proposal, HB 984, was originally meant for medical practitioners who render free professional services to the indigent.

January 26, 2021 | 8:07 pm Font Size PHILSTAR THE House of Representatives approved on second reading a measure that will reduce the taxes of health frontliners. In the plenary session on Tuesday, the lower house approved on second reading House Bill No. 8259, which will provide income tax relief to medical frontliners. “I would like to thank all my colleagues for helping out in this very valuable measure,” according to Deputy Majority Leader Juan Miguel M. Arroyo after the measure was approved. Mr. Arroyo stood in for Albay 2 nd District Representative Jose María Clemente S. Salceda, who was the original sponsor of the measure.
