New artificial reefs to be built offshore near Terrebonne, Lafourche

Local anglers will have a few new offshore fishing spots soon, according to the state s largest sport fishing group. Three new artificial reefs will be built in the Gulf of Mexico just offshore in Terrebonne and Lafourche by the Louisiana Coastal Conservation Association, which hopes to attract fish to the sites of former oil platforms. One will be at Bay Marchand Block 3, located just southeast of Port Fourchon in Lafourche. Made of recycled concrete structures near shore at a depth of 45 feet, the reef will host shallow-water fish and a mangrove habitat. South Timbalier Block 51 in Terrebonne, about 15 miles south of Timbalier Island, will be on a 300-foot barge deployed primarily to attract red snapper.
