BAUCHI residents woke up early in the week to devastating news of the fire outbreak that the destroyed the famous Bababa Shopping Complex in the city centre with goods worth hundreds of millions of naira destroyed within the six hours the inferno lasted. Although investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the fire, several eyewitnesses told Arewa Voice that it started from a corner shop, but was first noticed around 11.30pm the previous day.
Alhaji Murtala Maiyadi, Chairman, Bababa Shopping Complex pointed out that the unfortunate fire outbreak that destroyed no fewer than 90 shops and many other property could have been averted if the Bauchi State Fire Service was proactive. But the Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Fire Service, Abubakar Baba, said that three vehicles were deployed to the scene to curtail further damage by the fire.

Good worth million of naira were destroyed in the early hours of Saturday as fire gutted Bababa Shopping Plaza, located inside the popular Wunti Market in Bauchi metropolis.
DAILY POST gathered that the fire incident started on the top floor of the one-storey plaza at about 12:45am.
Confirming the incident in a telephone interview with DAILY POST, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Bauchi State Fire Service, Abubakar Babanyaya Bala, disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that the fire outbreak occurred as a result of power surge in one of the over 100 shops.
According to Bala, as of the time traders were closing on Friday, there was no power supply to the plaza, adding that the power surge leading to the fire outbreak happened when public power was restored.
Alhaji Murtala Maiyadi, Chairman, Bababa Shopping complex, Bauchi, has disclosed that a fire outbreak has destroyed 90 shops and properties worth 50million, at the complex, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
He said that the fire, which began at 11.30pm on Friday, 12 Feb. 2021, lasted for six hours, after starting from a corner shop.
“Officials of the state fire service came to the scene; then it was only five shops that were down, but could not stop the fire because at the time they had only one truck and the water got finished.
“90 shops were burnt down by the fire outbreak and N50 million worth properties were destroyed,” he said.
