The Senate kills an effort to override the Governor’s veto of legislation that would remove the need to get a permit to carry a concealed firearm for those 21 and older. That came after four Senators backed away from their previous support of the bill in the regular session resulting in the override effort falling three votes short.
Three of the four Senators to change their mind were Republicans. One of those was Natchitoches Senator Louie Bernard who told colleagues after some reflection away from Baton Rouge and conversations with local law enforcement leaders he just couldn’t keep his support.

Baton Rouge Senator Franklin Foil authored Senate Bill 86 on behalf of the Louisiana Development Disabilities Council and concerned parents whose special needs children experienced mental and/or physical abuse in the classroom.
“I’m not suggesting it’s a widespread problem but simply a safeguard,” said Foil.
Baton Rouge physician and mother of a nonverbal special needs daughter, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Christian said she will never forget the day when she sat in an Individualized Education Program for her daughter and learned of ongoing abuse.
