New wildfire has popped up just west of Williams Lake SHARE ON: Fire Information Officer Jessica Mack says the fire is on the east side of Soda Creek Road. “That one is estimated to be about one hectare in size.  Air tankers have actioned that fire and we do have aircraft and personnel that are working to suppress that fire right now.” Mack says there are currently 70 active wildfires within the Cariboo. That total includes 10 in both the Williams Lake and Quesnel fire zones, and 8 in the Chilcotin. Most though, 42, are still within the 100 Mile House fire zone. Mack says they have seen increased fire activity over the past couple of days, even to the point where personnel had to be pulled back on the Big Stick Lake wildfire due to safety concerns.

Cariboo Fire Centre has seen 162 fires this year SHARE ON: There are currently 70 active wildfires within the Cariboo. That’s according to Fire Information Officer Jessica Mack. Most though, 42, are still within the 100 Mile House fire zone. Mack says they have seen increased fire activity over the past couple of days, even to the point where personnel had to be pulled back on the Big Stick Lake wildfire due to safety concerns. She says they are playing a bit of catch-up on that fire today. “Our personnel are working to re-establish machine guard and hose lay in areas where the wildfire did cross the guard.  And we do have some aircraft that are in the area as well that are working to cool hot spots.”

Progress is being reported on the wildfires burning in the Cariboo SHARE ON: The Purdy Lake wildfire, south of Batnuni Lake, is now up 900 hectares in size. Jessica Mack, a Fire Information Officer with the BC Wildfire Service, confirms that due to windier conditions that fire has been active, but she says it is burning away from the area on evacuation alert. “It is moving in a more southerly direction and that is going into the Kluskoil Lake Park, and BC Parks has been engaged regarding suppression efforts in there.   We have 27 firefighters and 9 pieces of heavy equipment that are working to suppress that fire right now.”

A couple of the wildfires of note in the Cariboo have grown SHARE ON: Canim Lake wildfire (Dtaylor-MyCaribooNow-staff) The South of Canim Lake fire is now up to 1,250 hectares, from 582 at last report. The BC Wildfire Service says a heavy equipment task force team, consisting of 10 pieces of heavy equipment, is expected to arrive on site today. That team will begin contingency guard construction at locations identified by ground crews in conjunction with the Canim Lake Band. Structural Protection Specialists continue to assess properties today as well. That fire has properties in the Canim Lake and Forest Grove areas on evacuation alert.
