Breweries of all sizes are increasingly dealing direct with barley growers and the simplified trading method is paying off for farmers like Chris and Samantha Greenwood.
Brewing giant Asahi made headlines recently when it re-wrote its supply chain arrangements so it could source 90 per cent of its malting barley direct from growers in New South Wales and Victoria.
This means Asahi will now source 40,000 tonnes of barley direct from seven growers in southern New South Wales with northern New South Wales growers expected to sign on before this year’s harvest.
A further 40,000 tonnes is also being sourced through 30 Victorian growers.

Popular Corktown restaurant Lady of the House is permanently closed
In another big blow to the Detroit dining scene, popular and nationally recognized Corktown restaurant Lady of the House has permanently closed.
Chef and owner Kate Williams confirmed the closing to The Detroit News; it was first reported by Eater Detroit Friday morning. Eater also reported that the building (formerly St. CeCe s Pub and before that Irish restaurant Baile Corcaigh) was put up for sale just before the pandemic, but wasn t in jeopardy because a long lease was put into place. While we are immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past four years, it is with heavy hearts that we have made the difficult decision to close our doors, Williams said in a statement, thanking her employees, past and present, and customers. In 2021, we’re embracing change, however uncomfortable, and we look forward to new and exciting things to come in the city we love.

Next up: Was there one restaurant in particular that you felt really stepped up for your local community? How did they do so?

Saffron De Twah definitely stepped up this year. Chef Omar was among the very first to see that doing business as usual, trying to reconfigure as a takeout or delivery restaurant was not going to work. He’s provided probably thousands and thousands of meals to communities throughout the year and he continues to do so during the holidays. I expect he’s figuring out
