you were saying that people had gathered there in this makeshift memorial that s right near the bat that clan concert hall to come pay their respects? reporter: that s right. the difference between yesterday and today could not be more different. it was like a ghost town in paris yesterday. however, today people were out in full force filling the street, this makeshift memorial here just out the bataclan theater. they were here paying their respects. they spent a day not knowing what was happening, locked in their homes. but they were out in full force. however, just in the early evening, there was a false alarm and people started running for cover. there was a big group of people gathering at the memorial that was kind of the center piece for the charlie hebdo attacks and had become a central part here for these attacks and people started running for their lives. running out of caves, then
belgium. one suspect managed to slip through the net early on. let s go to cnn international correspondent clarissa ward. tell us more about the hunt for this one individual terrorist salah abdelsalam. well, that s right, wolf. salah abdelsalam was actually stopped by the police driving towards the belgium border just hours after that attack. he is the brother of one of the attackers who blew himself up inside the bataclan theater. and yet he was able after being questioned for a short while to continue on. obviously the thought was that he went to belgium and we saw in the brussels suburb this morning extraordinary raid two entire city blocks shut off, the bomb squad were brought in. they brought in mobile robotic bomb units, detonated explosions reported. and all across the country here in france today more than 150 rai raids, 23 arrests, they said they found weapons, heavy weapons, rocket launchers, they
and of course the highest death toll was inside the bataclan theater. we just have a new death toll from the attacks. according to afp, the number now is 132 dead. we know that 352 were injured, 99 critically. so we can understand that people are succumbing to those critical wounds. you were inside the bataclan when this happened. tell us how you saw it unfold. so [ inaudible ] and began to play at 9:00 p.m. so it was very crowded. so i decided to go upstairs so i could dance and get more space. at 10:00, we heard you thought it was crackers, fire crackers. yes. thought someone wanted to spoil the show.
that is where that black or dark gray volkswagen polio which is what initially led them to molenbeek. it was registered in this neighborhood. a vehicle matching that description was surrounded on saturday and taken away by police. that was the first thing that brought them here to the first place, that link to the bataclan attack. christiane? if you could just for our viewers who are just tuning in, just explain the belgian connection as we now know it. you mention the vehicle found outside the bataclan, a vehicle with license plates from belgium. there s another vehicle found that was believed to be the getaway vehicle used in several of the attacks on various restaurants. the gunman in that attack, the terrorist in that attack i believe is believed to have detonated a device killing himself. whoever drove that vehicle is
he was a known radical to authorities, had ties to extremist groups. and he had been arrested eight times in the past. he was one of the four gunmen here at the bataclan theater who is responsible for slaughtering more than 80 people at this scene. the prosecutor also revealed that another one of the attackers had a syrian passport. and another was carrying an egyptian passport. we re now learning from a greek official that the syrian terrorists crossed into the european union through the greek island of laros. he did that in october. his passport was checked there. we don t kw if it was checked at other passport control areas on his way from the greek islands to paris. as you know, it s easy to travel across europe without getting your passport checked in many cases. we don t know if his passport set off any red flags. according to the greek official, the second one may have passed through the greek islands as a refugee among the syrian
