Weynard Joseph Untalan, acting project engineer of the Ilocos Norte-Ilocos Sur-Abra Irrigation Project (INISAIP), said Monday the PHP25.7-billion project is expected to irrigate over 14,000 hectares farmlands in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Abra. One of the main clean-up activities involves the use of a backhoe to remove water lilies that impede water flow to the sea. Marcell N. Tabije, local disaster risk reduction, and management officer, said Saturday all the floodwater that comes from downtown Laoag goes to the Caoacan creek, hence the need to clear out the debris, particularly the fast-growing waterlilies in this area. "We are declogging these waterways annually to bring back their depth to prevent overflow that inundates nearby communities," said Tabije. LAOAG CITY - The Department of Agriculture (DA) - Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) in Batac City is set to construct a suitable seed warehouse to ensure the storage of high-quality crops planted in this part of northern Luzon. PhiliRice-Batac branch director Hazel Jane Orge confirmed this on Wednesday as the agency secured a total of PHP25 million for the construction of the project within the compound of the state-run Mariano Marcos State University in Barangay 17 Tabug, Batac City, behind the National Tobacco Administration - PhilRice building. "The groundbreaking ceremony of the seed warehouse is set on July 19, 2022, and it is funded by the DA Regional Field Office 1," she said. According to PhilRice, the multi-purpose storage facility with a total area of 1,152 square meters will help the station produce high-quality seeds and make them fully available for farmers.
