Strong showing for Conservatives in County Council elections Basingstoke s Conservatives are celebrating after a strong showing in county council elections that saw them make inroads into opposition seats. The party retained all seven divisions of Basingstoke s Hampshire County Council seats they held after the 2017 elections, but decreased the Labour majorities in Basingstoke North and Central. There were just 116 votes separating the Labour and Conservative candidates in the Central division, with Labour candidate Kim Taylor picking up the ward formerly held by Mike Westbrook. And the Conservatives managed to edge out Labour in Basingstoke North West, meaning the party s Basingstoke leader Andy McCormick could not get on the county council.
CONCERNS raised about a housing developer felling trees during bird nesting season have stopped the work going ahead. Bloor Homes was looking to chop the trees down at the entrance to the Golf Club in preparation to build 1,000 homes on the site, after being granted permission for the development by the borough council last year. The developer was in discussion with Hampshire County Council’s Highways department regarding removing the trees to create an access to the site and was hoping to carry this out before the bird nesting season. However, concerns were raised because the bird nesting season – which runs from February to August – had already begun when the request was made.
