Councillor Paul Spooner sought for the council to suspend all work on the Byron Shire Rail with Trail project at the council s meeting on Thursday. While a solar train runs between Elements of Byron Resort and the CBD, the remainder of the shire s rail corridor remains disused, with its future unclear for now. Cr Spooner s motion sought information on whether discussions took place between the council s staff and the mayor or any the councillor as to the perceived benefits of getting a positive result for a railway option .

Subscriber only The deputy chair of Rous County Council has made a plea to Northern Rivers residents to voice their support for the Dunoon Dam. Ballina Shire councillor Sharon Cadwallader made the request via social media, asking people to email Rous County Council and show support for the project. Cr Cadwallader is one of three Rous councillors who have tabled a rescission motion to bring the dam back into the Future Water Plan 2060. The Multi Use Rail Corridor Study (MURC) is supposed to be independent but the council refuses to reveal its terms of reference document. This would no doubt be because aim of the report was to make a positive finding for the practicality of running trains. The trail was clearly a secondary consideration which is why the discussion of the benefits of the trail were based on urban cycle usage and completely ignored that it would be part of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. Arcadis, the company that prepared the report, had no experience with rail trails. Their inexperience shows throughout the report.
