Rider to take on epic around the world horse trek

Horse & Hound Trending: Credit: Nikita Gretsi A man who learnt to ride only two years ago will take on an epic journey around the world journey on horses currently living wild in the woods of Siberia. Hertfordshire-based Nikita Gretsi, 21, will begin “The Last Great Journey” in Magadan, Russia, and will ride across Eurasia – covering 15,000km, 11 time zones and eight countries – to London. From there, he plans to ride a further 6,000km across north America, plus another part of Russia, to finish. Nikita, who is of Russian, Ukranian, Estonian and Uzbek heritage, told H&H he came up with the idea to ride across Eurasia in 2019 – having never ridden a horse before.

But I feel I know her, for I’ve read her story, and that of her stallion, Count Pompeii, whose legend carries on in the extraordinary website she created as the hub of the Long Riders’ Guild. This is her work, I know, for she was the IT person. Though published herself, she considered CuChullaine the writer.

From the moment she climbed aboard her first pony, Mustard, she was destined to be an equestrian explorer. Basha, who died in France on January 13 after a brief illness, found solace in the saddle, feeding what came to be an insatiable appetite to see the world on horseback.
