Around $10 billion worth of reusable electronics and batteries is ending up in the world’s rubbish every year, adding to pressure on supplies of raw materials such as lithium and copper. Unused cables, electronic toys, LED-decorated novelty clothes, power tools and vaping devices are among the items containing parts that could be recycled. Lithium is a "strategic raw material," due to its use in batteries and electronics, in the eyes of the European Union. Enough cable to circle the Earth 107 times gets thrown out every year, and with it vast quantities of "precious, easily recyclable copper," according to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Forum.
