Even after almost two years of the launch of the door-to-door garbage collection campaign, the recycling plant of the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation is yet to be established.
As a result of this, garbage collected from houses has been lying all over the district. The civic body is also yet to carry out segregation of dry and wet waste, while majority of the houses in 55 wards have not received garbage bins as promised under the integrated solid waste management programme of the DMC.
The project, worth Rs 274 crore, was launched by the DMC on June 27, 2019, in association with Hyderabad-based agency Ramky Enviro Engineers.

Dhanbad was second last with a rank of 48 in an ease of living survey conducted by the Centre among 49 cities with capital Ranchi faring marginally better with a rank of 42, prompting residents to list out the primary inadequacies as unplanned development, lack of a working sewage system and poor public transport.
Bangalore and Shimla were the top two cities in the Ease of Living Index-2020 released by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs that looked at cities with a population of more than 10 lakh.

Concerned over the issue, Madhurendra Singh, former president of Bartand Chamber of Commerce and a civil rights activist, on Tuesday wrote to municipal commissioner Satyendra Kumar, demanding immediate resumption of fogging services in all 55 wards of the district.

“I have also drawn the attention of the Municipal Commissioner towards the fact that during the pandemic expired chemicals were used for fogging. As a consequence the grind was ineffective in yielding the desired result. It merely generated smoke,” he added.

As many as 18,000 streetlights installed across the town under the 14th Finance Commission tenure are lying defunct due to poor maintenance including the non-payment to contractors.
The streetlights installed on Polytechnic road near the Bekar Bandh pond are in the worst condition. Those on Joraphatak road are posing threat to commuters as a majority of them are rusted.
Madhurendra Singh, a social worker of Dhanbad who is also the former president of Bartand Chamber of Commerce, said: “At several places, the wires in switch boxes are lying open.”
