The School Board voted unanimously in January to rename Maywood Elementary School for Burns Hicks. Since, the elementary school has also rebranded its colors and is now known as the
HAMMONDÂ â African Americans have âprovided significant contributions to every walk of life,â including education, said Councilman Barry Tyler, D-3rd.
Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr., the Department of Community Development, the Black History Coalition Committee and the Hammond Human Relations Commission hosted a virtual Black History Month celebration Friday at City Hall. The theme was â2021 Leadership in Educationâ and honored black principals and assistant principals.
Tyler said the celebration can âshine light on local heroes,â and provide reminders of the prejudices their predecessors faced.
âWe see you and we appreciate you,â Tyler said.
