He served two tours aboard uss hendersonson off the shore of vietnam from 1970 twoub 73. Has both the Communications Officer and then as combat information and intelligence officer. He then served two years on a joint chief of staff assignment in the mountain at nor rad in colorado. After leaving the navy in 1975, barry attended law school in baltimore hand a career for over 30 years as a civil Trial Attorney specializing in medical malpractice, construction cases, personal injury and civil rights cases. He was also an adjunct professor of law and presently serves as a facilitator for the Naval Academy, capstone Ethical Leadership ship program in annapolis. Could you give us more about your background, where yo grew up, where you came from and why you joined . Im a College Graduate. You had to be a College Graduate to go into the Army Air Core. In 1941. I remember japanese bomb pearl harbor in december. I graduated six months later. From college. And the draft board was after me. Trying to bite me to send me to the army. If the draft board had caught me, i would be a buck private. Making 21 a month. But i stayed allowed joined the Army Air Core. And as a cadet learning how to fly with the excitement. 75 a month. And after nine months you became a Second Lieutenant with a gold bar on your shoulder. And a set of wings. You made 150 a month. Plus 75 for flying pay. Which would you take . American veteran center and we appreciate him and his good counsel. Hes elected leader of his Naval Academy class. Put your hands together for Barry Steelman [ applause ] thank you, paul. I first want to welcome all of the students here today as well as all of the active duty retirees, veterans, and honored guests to help us carry out our purpose at American Veteran center. And that is of honoring our past iconic heroes from the greatest generation to the present generation. And to help us educate our future leaders, many of whom are sitting here today. Over these three days you are being exposed to some of the finest and bravest men and women that have so proudly served our country over the past more than a half a century. During this conference, you have heard from various people from different wars, different experiences, and each with different lessons to teach you from their own life experiences.
