Taiwan is seeking to become 80 percent autonomous in manufacturing key satellite components by 2025 and develop small launch rockets, National Space Organization (NSPO) Director-General Wu Jong-shinn (吳宗信) said yesterday.
Following the six-satellite Formosat-7/COSMIC-2 constellation’s launch in 2019, weather observation satellite Triton is scheduled to be launched next year, Wu told a news conference in Taipei to mark the agency’s 30th anniversary.
Meanwhile, the agency is working on the Formosat-8 project, which would comprise six remote-sensing satellites with a resolution of 0.7m each, Wu said, adding that its first satellite is set to be launched in 2023.

Forbes announced in its Taiwan’s Richest 2021 list.
It was the first time that the low-key, self-made tycoon ranked No. 1 on
Forbes’ list of the top 50 billionaires in Taiwan.
Huali Industrial, which owns production facilities in China, Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, supplies international customers such as Nike Inc, Puma AG, UGG and Vans, the magazine said.

Taipei, May 7 (CNA) Zhang Congyuan (張聰淵), founder of contract shoe maker Huali Industrial, took the title as the richest person in Taiwan, with a net worth at US$13.8 billion, according to Taiwan s Richest 2021 list released by Forbes.
It was the first time for the low-key, self-made tycoon, to top the Forbes top 50 billionaires list in Taiwan.
Huali Industrial owns production facilities in China, Vietnam and Dominica, and its international customers include Nike, Puma, UGG and Vans, the magazine said.
The benchmark Taiex index rose 45% since fortunes were last measured 15 months ago, lifting the collective net worth of Taiwan’s 50 richest by a third to US$149 billion. Overall, 36 listees added to their wealth. The complete 2021 Forbes Taiwan Rich List can be found here.
Component shortage could last through 2022

Business tycoons yesterday said that component shortages might persist through next year due mainly to lingering demand-supply imbalances and chaos in the shipping industry.
“It will take a while to resolve ongoing component shortages that have slowed product delivery,” said Rock Hsu (許勝雄), chairman of the Third Wednesday Club (三三會), whose membership is limited to the top 100 firms in each business sector.
Companies would have to exercise caution in dealing with the issue, as it might extend into next year, Hsu said.
