Marijuana growing and retail, 150 new apartments at old Shaw-Walker factory get initial OK

Marijuana growing and retail, 150 new apartments at old Shaw-Walker factory get initial OK Updated Jan 25, 2021; MUSKEGON, MI – A highly visible old factory near downtown and Muskegon Lake is the site of a redevelopment proposal that features marijuana growing and new apartments. City staff warned it could be the last chance to save the sprawling building, the former Shaw-Walker factory. The plans for the property at 920 Washington Ave. and 965 W. Western Ave. are the latest in a series of proposals for the historic factory near Muskegon Lake, which included a large indoor entertainment complex that never came to fruition. Watermark Center currently includes 53 residential lofts, the Watermark 920 event center and the Coffee Factory eatery.

Large marijuana grow operation recommended for sprawling old factory in Muskegon

Large marijuana grow operation recommended for sprawling old factory in Muskegon Updated Dec 16, 2020; MUSKEGON, MI – A large-scale marijuana growing and processing operation could go into the vacant portion of the old Shaw-Walker factory in Muskegon, a section of which currently houses condos. The Muskegon Planning Commission has endorsed a request by the building’s owners to be zoned for all types of marijuana licensing. The building, which houses the Watermark Lofts condominiums, Coffee Factory restaurant and the Watermark 920 Conference Center, was already placed in a district that allows for marijuana retail sales. “That building has been vacant and falling apart slowly for a long time,” Muskegon Planning Director Mike Franzak told the planning commission earlier this month. “We’ve already seen part of it come down. I don’t know how much longer it has to go.”
