now, president trump s ordering the defense department to also plan to pull 7,000 soldiers, nearly half the troops currently serving from afghanistan. also, against the collective counsel of his top military brass. if we leave 20 odd of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world centered in that region, and we walk out of there, then we know what will happen. our intelligence services are very specific that we will be under attack in a number of years. the current contenders to replace general mattis at the pentagon include general jack keane, a fox news contributor, who has already intimated he s not interested in the job. senator tom cotton, a former army captain who served in iraq and afghanistan, and is opposed to pulling out of syria. and patrick shanahan, currently mattis deputy and one of the lone supporters of president trump s space force which much of the pentagon opposed.
his observation about that lunch at the white house. i was hopeful that we were making good progress based on some of the comments i ve heard, you know, in the last 12 hours or so, i don t know that there s a whole lot of progress that has been made between the two sides. and i know that the president is prepared for a very long government shut down. and the president s preparation for that long government shutdown became especially evident when senate minority leader schumer took to the senate floor to basically indicate no negotiation over border wall funding. it will never pass the senate. not today. not next week. not next year. so mr. president, president trump, if you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall. plain and simple. if there was any doubt that schumer meant exactly what he
whatever you want to call it, but we need a great barrier, and if we don t have it, it s never going to work. the president s going to go as far as it takes to protect the american people. negotiations are ongoing. a senior administration official told reporters the trump administration is putting forward what they consider to be realistic expectations for these negotiations, and they continue to articulate what their expectations are for congress, and that is 5 billion dollars for border security and a physical barrier. a poll conducted earlier this month, 54% of american voters opposed building a wall on the mexico border, and 54% said a wall is not necessary to improve border security. but 86% of republicans support the wall and 59% said they support shutting down the government over the wall. democrats strongly oppose the wall. independent voters were divided in that poll. president trump is siding with his base here. the president did have a working lunch regarding border secu
