Sir Keir Starmer fumed today that it was outrageous Test and Trace contractor Serco has restarted dividends after raking in hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers cash during the pandemic.
The outsourcing giant published its financial report for 2020 today, showing a surge in profits after being handed £350million in Government Covid contracts.
Serco is doing so well that it has restarted dividends for the first time since 2014, despite the contact tracing scheme it runs being chaotic and having little impact on controlling the UK s crisis.
Who runs NHS Test and Trace? “Surely the NHS?”, you might say.
Not according to NHS England’s boss, Sir Simon Stevens. When quizzed by the Health and Science Committee last month, Stevens said: “I can’t comment specifically on Test and Trace because that is run by the Department of Health and Social Care rather than the NHS or NHS England per se.”
NHS Test and Trace is not the right name for the contact tracing scheme. But nor is “The Department of Health’s Test and Trace”, or “Serco Test and Trace” as so many have argued for it to be rebranded as.
