Letter: Careful what you wish for with Fairness Doctrine

It did not take long after the new administration was sworn in for progressives to call for a return to the “Fairness Doctrine.” Established in 1949, it was introduced as a policy that required holders of broadcast licenses to present news and political issues that were honest, equitable, and balanced.
Broadcasters were required to devote some airtime to discuss controversial subjects of political and public interest and to air contrasting views.
Democrats and Republicans both have taken advantage of the doctrine. Originally aimed at radio stations, it also applied to television. There are arguments both for and against the Fairness Doctrine. Perhaps it would force debate and if applied equally would offer differing views so the public can make their own decisions.
