DURHAM S top police officer faced one of her toughest jobs yet when she had to pick the winner of an award recognising youngsters who have gone and beyond for their communities. Top spot in the Teesdale Young Heroes Award went to Ethan Fletcher who organised his own bake off competition for Cancer Research UK. Ethan organised everything from booking his village hall to approaching local businesses for prizes and raised more than £600 for the charity. He has also raised £300 for Heel & Toe, a charity which supports children with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities, which he has used in the past.

30 Apr 2021 The air ambulance arrives EMERGENCY services are in the process of rescuing a person from a mine shaft in upper Teesdale. Crews from the fire brigade, fell rescue, ambulance service and the Great North Air Ambulance are at Coldberry Level, near Middleton-in-Teesdale, responding to an incident. PC Harry Marsh, from Barnard Castle Police, said: “The fire service are with the mountain rescue team on site responding to a walker who has fallen down a mine shaft. They are trying to get them out now.” A person who lives nearby said: “The mine shaft is on a level and you can wade into the water. They are only amateurs, not expert cavers.

Police raid property in Teesdale after birds poisoned

28 Apr 2021 ILLEGALLY KILLED: The buzzards found dead in woodland last year TWO men are helping police with their enquiries after two birds of prey were found dead in Teesdale. Last Wednesday morning Barnard Castle Police, the RSPB, Natural England and the National Wildlife Crime Unit carried out searches at two properties at an undisclosed location in the dale. It follows an incident last year when two common buzzards were found dead in Teesdale woodland. Forensic tests indicate they were illegally poisoned with a banned pesticide. After gathering information, the team searched the properties for any harmful substances and two men are now helping officers with their enquiries.
