The embattled Broward County Public Schools superintendent and a top district lawyer who were both indicted on felony charges last week have agreed to step down and the board plans to vote on their replacements as early as Thursday.
Superintendent Robert Runcie was accused of lying under oath, and Barbara Myrick, the district’s general counsel, has been charged with unlawfully disclosing secret grand jury proceedings. Both charges are third-degree felonies. Both Ms. Myrick and Mr. Runcie have agreed to do a mutual termination agreement, said Debbi Hixon, a Broward County School Board member. We will vote on this Thursday so that the Chair and the Attorneys can work on the agreement.
FORT LAUDERDALE (AP) â The South Florida school superintendent overseeing Parkland schools has resigned amid continuing criticism over the 2018 mass shooting there and a perjury charge from a statewide grand jury.
Robert Runcieâs resignation late Tuesday came hours after he released a video statement saying he would be cleared of the perjury charge and would not step down. The districtâs top lawyer also resigned on Tuesday night. Both indicted by a grand jury last week.
Runcie, 59, led the nationâs sixth largest school district for nearly 10 years and had been lauded for closing the achievement gap between white and minority students. He had also been named superintendent of the year multiple times by both state and national organizations.
In new paperwork filed Wednesday, Runcie pleaded not guilty to the charge and requested a trial by jury. He also filed a motion to dismiss the case, calling it vague, indefinite and uncertain as to embarrass and hinder the defendant in the preparation of defendant s defense and in the event of conviction or acquittal, would subject the defendant to multiple trials on the same circumstances.

Broward County School District moves forward with separation from Runcie, but it may cost taxpayers
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Sooner rather than later. That’s the approach the Broward School Board is taking when it comes to parting ways with Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie and the school district’s general counsel Barbara Myrick.
When it comes to exit pay, it could be costly to taxpayers.
Board member Lori Alhadeff asked about compensation and was told that under state law, the board may have to pay Runcie 20 weeks worth of pay, which, based on his salary, is about $137,000 and $196,000 for accrued sick and vacation time.
The Broward County school board will begin hashing out the details of Superintendent Robert Runcie's exit during a meeting Thursday, following his announcement earlier this week that he would be willing to "step aside" from his position.
