Happy Trails: Volusia Cuts Ribbon On New Spring-To-Spring Trail Segment

May 22, 2021 | 1:23 PM DeLeon Springs, FL – Residents and visitors in West Volusia now have another trail to enjoy as Volusia County adds another segment to a trail connecting the county’s springs. This new segment adds 1.7 miles to the now 21 mile long Spring-to-Spring Trail; which will be just over 27.2 miles when completed, stretching from DeLeon Springs State Park to Green Springs Park. The Spring-to-Spring trail is also just one part of the partially completed 260-mile St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop, which currently travels through  the counties of Volusia, Flagler, Brevard, St. Johns and Putnam.   And to District 1 councilwoman Barbara Girtman, this goes beyond just connecting trails. Volusia County s COVID-19 emergency remains despite DeSantis order

Daily coronavirus cases have declined to an average of 99 cases per day in Volusia County in the past two weeks. Deaths are also down, but hospitalizations are up locally and across Florida as COVID-19 variants continue to spread. The pair of orders DeSantis imposed Monday suspended and invalidated any local order in Florida which restricts the rights or liberties of individuals or their businesses. The last remaining mask mandates in DeLand, Orange City and New Smyrna Beach were nullified by the orders, but Volusia County never imposed a countywide mask mandate or restrictions on businesses. However, the federal mask mandate on public transportation still applies at the Daytona Beach International Airport and on Votran buses.

Taking the vaccine to the people

The Islamic Center of Daytona Beach has been the site of many community events in the past. It will host a vaccine event on Friday. DUANE C. Those vaccinated are now no longer required to wear masks when doing the following: Walking, running, hiking or biking outdoors alone or with members of their household. Attending small outdoor gatherings with fully vaccinated family and friends. Attending small outdoor gatherings with a mixture of fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

Volusia asks for $56K bus stop after homeless shelter resident s death

Volusia County is seeking to put a bus stop outside the First Step Shelter two months after a shelter resident died while crossing the four-lane highway to get to catch the bus. The Volusia County Council unanimously agreed to apply for a $56,000 grant to build a sidewalk and ADA-accessible bus stop shelter on the south side of U.S. 92 near the First Step Shelter. Currently, the nearest stop on the south side of U.S. 92 is about a half-mile east of the shelter. Death near shelter happened in January Ashley Baker, 30, was crossing U.S. 92 in the early morning hours of Jan. 25 when she was struck by a pickup. She was taking the bus to a new job at Trader Joe s Warehouse in Daytona Beach.
